When it comes to discreet orthodontic treatment, Invisalign® is one of the most popular options. If you are considering Invisalign to straighten your teeth, it is important to learn how to properly clean and care for your trays.
Here, Dr. Thomas Tang and our Brookfield, WI, team share tips on how to clean Invisalign aligners. Following these simple guidelines will help reduce the risk of odor, discoloration, and accumulation of harmful bacteria.
Rinse Your Aligners after Removal
Every time you remove your aligner trays, rinse them thoroughly. This helps prevent plaque and saliva from drying on them. Neglecting to do this can result in a buildup of bacteria.
Brush Your Invisalign Trays Twice a Day
Get into the habit of brushing your trays whenever you brush your teeth. This removes plaque deposits, food particles, and bacteria. We recommend using a soft-bristled brush and antibacterial soap since some kinds of toothpaste can be too abrasive on the aligners. Additionally, choose an unscented, colorless soap, as certain dyes can discolor your trays.
Soak Your Aligners Once Daily
Patients should soak their Invisalign aligners once every day. This can be completed using Invisalign cleaning crystals. Before inserting the trays back in your mouth, be sure to brush off any residual particles, then rinse the aligners thoroughly. To maximize wear time, soak your trays during meals. Remember, the trays must be worn at least 22 hours every day to be fully effective.
Always Use a Protective Case
Whenever you are not wearing your Invisalign trays, store them in your case provided by our Brookfield dental team. Leaving them exposed could increase the risk of bacterial buildup. In addition, your trays are less likely to become damaged or warped if you keep them in your protective case.
Plan Accordingly When Traveling
If you are going to be traveling for two weeks or longer, let us know so we can provide you with your next set of aligners. Because Invisalign trays must be switched out every couple of weeks, it can negatively impact treatment if you do not plan ahead. Furthermore, we recommend that patients always keep their aligner trays in their carry-on luggage when flying. That way, a delayed flight will not mean a delay in treatment.
Avoid Wearing Trays While Eating or Drinking
To keep your Invisalign trays clean and clear, do not wear them while eating or drinking. With the exception of water, you should not consume any food or beverages at all while they are in place. Eating with your trays in not only causes food to become lodged between your teeth, but it also discolors the aligners.
Do Not Neglect Your Teeth
It is important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once daily. This ensures that food particles, plaque, and debris are removed from the teeth surfaces before you put your trays back in. If you do not do this, then food becomes trapped between your aligners and your teeth. This can increase the risk of decay and other dental issues.
