How to Deal with Invisalign Discomfort
Invisalign® offers many benefits over traditional braces. One of the greatest advantages of Invisalign aligners is that they are completely free of metal. Not only does this make aligners far more discreet than braces, but it also makes them more comfortable.
While Invisalign is made of clear plastic that will not scratch and irritate the soft tissues of the mouth the way that that metal brackets and wires can, there may be some discomfort as a patient adjusts to each new set of aligners. Dr. Thomas Tang offers our Brookfield, WI patients tips for how to deal with Invisalign discomfort so they can reap the full benefits of this teeth straightening treatment.
Use Pain Medication
Invisalign aligners are not as bulky or irritating as traditional braces, but they do provide the subtle and consistent pressure that is needed to shift the position of the teeth. This pressure can cause the mouth to feel sore or uncomfortable as patients adjust to the Invisalign aligners. This typically lasts for the first day or two after progressing to a new set of aligners.
For most patients, discomfort is mild. However, there is no need to put up with any type of discomfort or pain. Patients can use over-the-counter pain medication as needed to alleviate soreness or tenderness.
Apply Ice Packs
Ice packs or cold compresses are another good option for our Brookfield patients. When applied to the outside of the cheeks, ice packs soothe the teeth, gums, and jaw to provide patients with relief from discomfort and mild inflammation.
It is important to protect the facial skin when applying ice packs, so patients should wrap ice in a lightweight cloth before placing it against the skin, and compresses should be applied for no more than 15 minutes at a time. Application can be repeated several times a day until discomfort subsides.
Avoid Hard Foods
Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed when a person eats, so there are no food restrictions throughout treatment. That being said, we do recommend that patients stay away from any foods that heighten discomfort.
If a patient’s mouth is feeling sore or uncomfortable, the patient should avoid hard, crunchy foods that put extra pressure on the teeth. In most cases, discomfort only lasts for a couple of days, so patients shouldn’t have to avoid their favorite foods for too long.
Wear Aligners Consistently
Since Invisalign aligners are easily removable, our Brookfield patients may be tempted to take short breaks to relieve discomfort. Unfortunately, this will only prolong the adjustment period and could compromise the results of treatment, if the patient is not careful.
Although aligners should be removed any time a patient eats, drinks, brushes, or flosses, they should be worn at all other times. Consistency is key when it comes to the effectiveness of Invisalign treatment, as well as adjusting to new aligners. Dr. Tang advises patients to keep their aligners in place for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours per day.
